Total Playing Time: 40:49

Mastered by Doug Sax at Mastering Lab, Hollywood, CA.

The track listing mistaken list the first two concertos as Op. 111. But yet, as I looked at other recordings that have these pieces, they would be listed as Op. 3.

Discussion about Vivaldi - Jaime Laredo / Scottish Chamber Orchestra - The Great String Concertos
Qwne
The Four Seasons were the first series of concertos that I was familiar with Vivaldi. When I was in a store checking out some cassette tapes, one of them was "The Great String Concertos". Since it was a digital recording, I thought it would have state-of-the-art sound (that's what people must've think back in the '80s). It was also mid-price, and I thought this would be worth listening to besides The Four Seasons. It does sound very good. The bass is rather light, something I would expect of some chamber orchestra recordings. But I wouldn't be too picky about the sound. Although I suspect that the treble might have been exaggerated due to the type of cassette that was on. The tape decks I had listened to it on had Dolby B noise reduction but not HX Pro. Sometimes I would use the CrO2 setting to cut down the exaggerated treble and it sounded fine. As for the players that didn't have Dolby, I would turn down the treble. Time and again, I have find them as enjoyable as The Four Seasons. I even bought other albums (mostly CDs) of other Vivaldi concertos that deserve to be called great works. One thing I've noticed on this album, when I compared the same pieces on other albums. It's actually 3 works from Opus 3, along with the RV 551 concerto (which, by the way, is the only major-keyed work on the album). The listing on back, as well on the CD or cassette, would refer to them as Opus 111. There's also a Contour Red Label reissue and they're also listed as Opus 111. On Discogs, I've entered the correct names of the concertos.Lately, the cassette has been squeaking. Kind of a bummer when such a thing would happen after a certain number of years. Maybe I might try something I've read on the Internet that could resolve it by using cooking oil, a cotton swab with a few other odds and ends and see how it could resolve it. Meanwhile, I decided to get the CD version of it (which I decided to sell after making MP3 files out of it). It was cheap, no doubt about that. I don't think many people have bought a budget CD like that. CD's may not have the advantages of vinyl records, but they're not compressed like MP3 and I don't have to worry about that squeaking on the cassette version. The sound itself could be "improved" by cutting down on the treble, just a little (at least, it wasn't like the cassette version). On CD, it's still very good. The performance is better than the sound. Would I recommend it? I would to those who like The Four Seasons and would like a worth while budget CD.
